AROMATIC SOLVENTS: TOLUENE, XYLENE, SOLVAREX RANGE

TotalEnergies offers a wide variety of aromatic solvents that includes classical solvents such as Toluene , Toluene TDI and Xylene  as well   aromatic fractions solvents such as, Solvarex 9 and Solvarex 10.  When a low naphtenic content is desired, Solvarex 9 and Solvarex 10LN are the preferred choices.

Aromatic solvents and regulatory requirements

Aromatic solvents are all classified as flammable or highly flammable liquids and are also liable to accumulate electrostatic charges during handling.

They are strictly regulated owing to their potential impacts on health and environment. As VOC they contribute to ozone production in the troposphere by photochemical reaction with NOx (action of sunlight in a chemical reaction with Nitrogen oxides). In addition, if discharged into an aquatic environment, only a small part will be dissolved in the water with the remainder floating on the surface. The biodegradability of aromatic solvents is low.

Since October 2005 toluene is classified category 2 for reproductive toxicity in CLP regulation and the European Regulation 1907/2006/EC (REACh) restricts its use in certain applications.

Toluene-based mixtures are classified category 2 for reproductive toxicity when its concentration is equal to or exceeds 3%. Furthermore, since June 2007 toluene may not be placed on the market as a substance or in mixtures in a concentration equal to or above 0.1% by weight, in adhesives and spray paints to general public.

Aromatic solvents, considering their physchem data, are VOC (volatile organic compounds).

Note: Not to be classified Carcinogen cat 2, naphthalene concentration in substances and mixtures must be below 1% in Europe.
