Generic Exposure Scenarios (GES)

The REACh regulation requires chemicals producers and importers to assess risks for human health and the environment by applying exposure scenarios. These scenarios must describe the operational conditions in which substances are used and, if necessary, define Risk Management Measures (RMM) to control exposure during substance use. Scenarios may be generic (Generic Exposure Scenarios: GES) or specific.

Risk assessment using these scenarios is mandatory for products classified as hazardous under the CLP regulation.

In 2008, ESIG developed GES in cooperation with European user organizations (such as AISE for soaps and detergents, CEPE for paints and coatings, FEA for aerosols, FECC for chemical distribution and FEICA for adhesives and sealants, etc.).

Exposure scenarios must be communicated to anyone liable to be exposed to substances classified as hazardous. They describe substance operating, handling and storage conditions and recommend protective measures such as wearing gloves, goggles or dust masks.

Exposure scenarios are contained in the annex of the extended Safety Data Sheets (e-SDS) which are distributed to customers and are available on the Quick-FDS website. Any uses not mentioned in Safety Data Sheets must be reported to the producer so that a health and environmental risk assessment can be carried out, accepted and approved or not by the producer.
