Hydrocarbon solvents material safety data sheets

SAFETY DATA SHEETS (SDS)

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a document containing, inter alia, data about substance properties, its handling and storage conditions, as well its international classification and inventories. This document is mandatory for chemical products classified as hazardous and placed on the market.

However, TotalEnergies' policy is to provide SDSs whether the product is classified as hazardous or not.

An SDS identifies the commercial product and provides information on possible classification related to physico-chemical properties (section 9), toxicology (section 11), ecological information (section 12), and information about protective and emergency measures. Data about dangerous goods transportation and national inventories is provided in sections 14 and 15.

Since REACh, if a substance is classified hazardous for human health and the environment, risk assessments must be done for all identified uses recognized by the producer and put in the annex of the extended SDS. The producer must be notified of any other use and carry out the required risk assessments before authorizing the use or not.

In addition, REACh requires SDS data to be consistent with information contained in REACh registration dossiers such as physico-chemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties, exposure scenarios and classification according to UN recommendations defined in the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and the CLP Regulation (EC) no. 1272/2008. SDSs are regularly updated to reflect regulatory changes relative to products and new product knowledge.
