OSPAR – OSLO AND PARIS CONVENTION FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT OF THE NORTH-EAST ATLANTIC
In the 1970s, to protect the environment, the Oslo and Paris convention was signed to protect the North Sea and the North-East Atlantic (OSPAR convention). All the contracting nations (including France) are required to apply the measures adopted. There are two variations of the OSPAR convention for the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea, respectively BARCOM, the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea, and HELCOM, the Helsinki Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area.
Under this convention, substances are classified according to their environmental impact. This classification, called HOCNF -Harmonized Offshore Chemicals Notification Format- has also been applied by Norway and is published on the CEFAS (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science) website.
